Metallics Coating

Metallics Coating

A metallic coating is similar to a coating or overlay and is ideal for upscale homes and businesses. You can easily create a beautiful look without spending much of your hard-earned money, opening up funds for other important projects.

You’ll most commonly see metallic flooring in high-end retail stores, lobby areas, hair salons, hotels, restaurants, nightclubs, and offices.

To apply a metallic coating to your flooring, you’ll want to have a clean, dry floor that’s free of grease, paint, oil, dust, curing agents, or foreign material, as all of these will prevent the metallic coating from adhering to the floor.

To ensure the concrete is prepared for its metallic coating, it should be roughened (or profiled) so that it feels like 50- to 80-grit sandpaper. Grinding, shot blasting, scarifying, and water blasting are all effective tools to achieve this feel for your concrete.

You can ensure that the concrete is level since having any high or low spots will skew the final look. We also recommend using a primer, specifically a pigmented epoxy-based coat, to provide greater adhesion and ensure the background has a solid color, which is essential for the iridescent metallic pigments. You can choose a primer color that’s ideal for the final look you want to achieve.

The metallic coating is made up of two separate 100% solid epoxies that you mix with the metallic pigment. Without that pigment, you just have a regular coating.

Epoxy coatings are flowable and, to a degree, can level out on their own, allowing you to easily spread them across the floor surface using a simple tool like a trowel, roller, or squeegee. After curing the coating, a top coat can protect the concrete from scuffs and keep it glossy for a long time to come.
